Groups of starving children would congregate at St Paul’s Church on Bree Street, where they were offered food on the steps of the church by the priest Reverend Sidney Warren Lavis. The street became known as Orphan Street.
The enthusiastic Rector campaigned to set up one of the first children’s homes ~ an orphanage for boys ~ which finally opened its doors in 1919 in an old farm house at the foot of table mountain.
Still going strong in today’s topsy-turvy world, known as the St Francis Children's home in Athlone, this extraordinary home cares for around 45 little boys in need from the age of 3 upwards.

Any kind of assistance and support for the health center is much appreciated. Medical professionals, as well as retired doctors, are especially welcome to volunteer their time and services. The knowledge transfer for both parties can be invaluable. If you have a particular specialty or experience in a certain type of medical/health field, we will find a placement in which you can be of best use within the clinic. Please be aware that if you are interested in volunteering as a doctor or a nurse you need to be registered with the Medical Council of Malawi for your placement, and this registration process often takes some time. Most volunteers are unable to obtain this credential, but are still able to make a substantial impact as ad visors.
